Wasp Control in Yorkshire, UK

As the winter chill begins to fade, some bugs and pests start to awaken from their winter hibernation. Among the many insects, you’ll begin to see wasps and bees emerge.

Queen wasps emerge in the spring and begin to build their nests in protected areas such as wall cavities, roofs, tree trunks, gardens, eaves and attics which can quickly escalate into full-blown wasp infestation if left to thrive.

Unlike most bees, wasps will aggressively protect their colonies, often resorting to attacking potential threats in a swarm. Multiple wasp stings combined with their safety in numbers can pose a real danger. This is why it’s better to be on the safe side and remove a wasp nest before it becomes a severe wasp problem.

What are wasps?

Wasps, also sometimes referred to as yellow jackets or hornets belong to a group of insects known as the Hymenoptera. The Hymenoptera group also consists of sawflies, bees, and ants.

While there are many species of wasps, the social Vespidae family are the ones which cause a reason for concern. Vespidae wasps are relatively large and feature long bodies divided into three distinct sections. Their bodies are banded in yellow and black or yellow and brown.

The two most common species of wasps that are likely to be found nesting your property in the UK are the:

  • Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris)
  • German Wasp (Vespula germanica).

The larger Hornet (Vespa crabro) may also nest in buildings but is most common in warmer, more southern regions.

The nest usually consist of a single queen wasp and up to 5000 worker wasps who are very protective of the nest and their wasp queen. While a nest will often start in the early spring at the size of a golf ball, they will reach their most substantial numbers in the later summer months. Due to this, it’s always best to eliminate a wasps nest threat early in the season before it has a chance to grow.

Identifying if you have a wasp problem

It can be common to see a wasp or two in the spring and summer, but how do you know if they are nesting somewhere in your home or business?

Seeing a nest is not always an indication of an active nest. This is because nests are usually only active for one season before being abandoned for the winter.

That said, it’s always a good idea to approach any potential nest with caution.

Wasp nests often resemble a thin, greyish brown, papier-mache type material and will often appear as a paper delicate brown mound with a single opening. Wasp nests get found in areas which are protected from the elements while still being accessible from the outside.

You can often find nests in wall cavities, roof spaces, bird boxes, garden sheds or garages. If any live wasps get spotted near a nest, it is highly likely that the nest is active.

For instances where the physical nest maybe is hidden inside a wall or building, look for excessive wasp presence in a particular area. If you frequently see wasps in a specific place, chances are there is a nest nearby.

If you suspect that there may be a wasp nest in your home or property, it’s best to consult a professional pest controller to investigate.

One of the qualified British pest control association professionals at Apex Pest Control will be able to safely determine the extent of the infestation and help you formulate a plan to eradicate wasp problems.

Don’t Wait to Deal with that Wasp Nest.

As mentioned above, wasp queens begin to build their nests at the first sign of spring. As the months grow warmer, their nest will quickly grow. A relatively small nest can become a massive nuisance in the height of summer. By eliminating the problem, in the beginning, you’ll save yourself a big headache later on.

Why You Should Opt for Professional Wasp Removal Services

While the internet is flooded with advice on DIY wasp removal, we highly recommend trusting this often dangerous endeavour to the nearby wasp pest control professionals. Unlike some other stinging insects like honeybees, wasps can be highly aggressive.

When their nest gets attacked, wasps tend to rely on the power of numbers to defend their territory, stinging and attacking in unison. For anyone with even a mild allergy to wasp stings, this can be quite a dangerous situation, resulting in the need for medical attention or some cases loss of life!

A professional wasp exterminator and removal service, like the team at Apex, will come equipped with the expert knowledge, proper safety equipment, professional pest control products, and the know-how to navigate tight spaces to handle the job quickly and efficiently.
